Hooded Merganser

Family: Anatidae

Size: It measures approximately 40 to 48 cm.

Longevity: The lifespan of the hooded merganser can be up to 16 years.

Habitat: It lives in lakes, beaver ponds, rivers and streams.

Food: It forages by diving and swimming underwater to collect small fish, crustaceans and aquatic insects. They also consume seeds and aquatic plants.

Did you know that hooded merganser chicks emerge from their nests only 24 hours after birth and soar from a height of up to ten meters? Their nest is located in the nesting boxes in the trees. They then head for the nearest pond.
