Fun fact!

The doe sometimes leaves her young fawns unattended for several hours, because the young are unable to follow the mother when she moves to look for food. Fawns should not be touched if found alone, as it is extremely rare for the doe to abandon her little ones.

Special Traits

The white-tailed deer is named after its white tail that shoots up like a warning flag when they are alarmed. They can also smell up to 90m away which helps them avoid predators.

Life in the Marsh

Deer are very present at the Éco-Odyssée Nature Park, and it is easier to see them in the fall and winter when there are no more leaves in the trees. This mammal also lives in deciduous and mixed forests, in abandoned fields, in orchards, and on the edges of waterways and swamps. In 2022, deer are less present in the water labyrinth, due to the many coyotes and coywolves on the territory.

Protection and Threats

The white-tailed deer’s population can change very quickly, they can become too large if not regulated or too small if they are more predators or humans hunting.
